The Kittens are Growing up!

Mason’s case study: http://tinykittens.com/cases/mason

We brought Mason in during a big Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) event back in October. A developer had purchased a large rural property with several derelict barns, and was just beginning to bulldoze them, not realizing they were home to about 60 feral cats and kittens. We got permission to set up a feeding station and start trapping the cats to spay and neuter them and find homes for as many as we could. We brought in about 26 cats that weekend, including Mason. He had a massive growth on the bottom of his right paw, his tail had been broken multiple times in multiple places, he had infections, and he needed extensive dental surgery. We took care of his paw, treated his infections and neutered him, and then kept him so he could recover from that surgery before doing his dental. He was the first feral I’ve had to splint and bandage without sedation, which is tricky enough with a socialized cat! He is one of the oldest surviving ferals we have seen, and throughout his recovery, he made it clear his feral instincts were deeply ingrained.

We planned to return him to his home on the farm when he was healed (the property owner agreed to continue feeding the cats and we provide food and medical care on an ongoing basis). Then we got his bloodwork back and discovered he has advanced kidney disease. It would be cruel for us to return him, knowing he would suffer and was unlikely to survive the winter. We had two options: euthanize him, or give him a chance to adjust to life in a home and provide hospice care for as long as he had left. We are a no-kill organization, and believe that any life is worth saving as long as we are able to alleviate suffering. Mason’s many scars told us how hard he had fought to survive this long, and we were determined to give him a chance to experience comfort, safety and freedom from pain during his sunset months.

I took Mason to my house, because his feral instincts told him humans were predators, and he reacted appropriately when one tried to interact with him. He was not a candidate for adoption.

I knew he was starting to feel comfortable here when I would come out of my bedroom in the morning and see the whole house rearranged – toys everywhere, rugs moved, pillows off the couch, all general indications of a happy cat engaging in rambunctious play. He still wanted no contact from me other than play time, but I was relieved that he was so clearly feeling better and happy to be alive. I thought that was a pretty great outcome for an old, terminally ill feral cat, and didn’t think it could get any better.

Then one day, I brought my foster kittens out for a “field trip” into the main house so they could experience a new setting as part of their socialization. They swarmed over to Mason’s lair, and started climbing all over him, just really invading his personal space. I was right there next to them, holding my breath and expecting him to hiss or growl and then slink away to hide under the couch… When Scrammy (ginger kitten) started licking Mason’s ear, and Mason leaned into it, I completely melted… the one thing missing for Mason had been contact with another living being, and while he didn’t want that from ME, he had clearly been craving it from his own kind.

HARLEQUIN’S STORY:
Harlequin was rescued by a veterinarian who happened to hear her little meows coming from a taped up box, next to trash & recycling bins, in an alley.
He took her back to his office and after taking an x-ray confirmed that Harlequin was pregnant and was due to give birth at any time.
The veterinarian reached out to KittenRescue.org for help and Harlequin is now being fostered by Sarah at the Kitten Cuddle Room
Harlequin is around 10 months to 1yr old.
She is SUPER sweet and very floofy!

*KITTENS ARE ADOPTED IN PAIRS, unless there is already a super friendly cat already in the home. But applications for pairs will be given priority as will applications local to Los Angeles.
Out of state adoptions will be considered, but you must be willing to cover the cost of flying Sarah and the kitties to your location. A home visit is mandatory. NO out of country adoptions are possible.

*******CHAT RULES*******
1. DON’T be mean. We joke & can be a bit sarcastic at times, but no bullying.

2. NO Spamming

3. NO overuse of emojis. Stick to 4 or less especially during a live birth.

4. NO ALL-CAPITAL LETTERS OR SPECIAL FONTS, except for our chatters who are CCing for our hearing impaired members
(providing closed-captions, that is, typing what Sarah is saying).
**** Especially during a live birth. If chat is going too fast, it makes it impossible for anyone who needs CCing to read it.

5.We like to be as inclusive as possible, so please avoid conversations about religion & politics.

6. BEFORE asking a question, please scroll back in chat a bit & check if it’s already been asked & answered. It helps to keep Sarah from having to repeat herself every five minutes.

7. DURING A LIVE BIRTH, please assume Sarah is NOT READING THE CHAT. If she can, she will, but asking her direct questions or things like, “move the camera” will most likely not be seen by her & just make chat unnecessarily clogged. Many questions can be answered by your fellow viewers, so please feel free to ask, but again, FIRST scroll back in chat & check if it’s been answered already.

8. This is REAL LIFE FOSTERING. Uncensored. Along with all the cuteness & cuddles, there is poop, sometimes worms, throw up, illness & sadly kittens can pass away.
If that is too much for you, we understand. Instead of upsetting the other viewers, please just excuse yourself. That doesn’t mean you can’t share concern or ask questions, but Sarah is an experienced foster, has lots of experienced support watching & helping her behind the scenes & unless you are a local licensed vet in Los Angeles who wants to offer your services for free, it doesn’t help to make judgments without all the information.

9. PLEASE don’t suggest to Sarah that she should keep her fosters. It is hard enough for her to let them go. She already has 4 of her own cats & caring for cats is not only about cuddling. She has no more space in her small home & regular vet care can be expensive, especially dental! (darn it Rob!!!!) She does not get paid to foster, the rescue does not supply food or kitty litter & she pays for the cam expenses herself. Everything she does is to help the kittens.
The goal is to help support Sarah, not only with kitty supplies:
but ALSO emotionally. That means not making adopting out these kitties she loves any harder than it already is. ❤

Kami & Her Kittens – So Much Cute & Crazy Fun!

Follow The Kits Cats on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/drnworb/
2 years ago this July 1st our Kami gave birth to her kittens in a machine shop. Luckily, a day and a half later she and her kittens were rescued by VOKRA and delivered into our foster care. Here’s a fun look back at Kami & her kittens Mutsu, Jupiter, Saturn, Elstar and Ambrose when they were about 7 or 8 weeks old and still in our foster care. Unfortunately Kami’s 6th kitten Fuji had to be put to sleep at 5 weeks old as he was very ill with hydrocephalus, RIP sweet little Fuji. Hey, we have inter-litter play! Cali pounces Miss Red and they have a “ferocious” wrassle before Cali is off to find someone else to pounce. Namely, her sister. Miss Red then proceeds to pounce… herself? Well, sure, why not.

Five kittens – two litters, surrendered in Tacoma and brought to Purrfect Pals when they ran out of time. Initially it looks like four girls and one boy – the cow/tuxedo being the only clear male. Names will be decided by drawing, as was done with Gaia’s kittens.

Mocha and the coffee bean kittens!

Watch fostercats and kittens live 24/7!

First: It´s normal for a mommacat to pant or breath fast after birth. It can last a few hours up to a week or more. It helps momma to bring her organs back into place.
Yes, it is warm in the room, cause the kittens can´t regulate their body temperature yet. In the kittenroom it´s about 25°C.

Mocha was thrown out by her owners when they broke up and left her behind when they moved.
She´s less then 2 years old an this is probably her first litter. We saw 2 kittens on the x-ray, but there could be 3 kittens.
She can give birth any time, cause the kittens are already pretty big and showed up well calcfied on the x-ray!

Mocha gave birth to two adorable coffee beans at June 11th.
Little tabby girl was born at 5.59pm German time with a birth weight of 107g.
Little ginger was born at 6.36pm German time with a birth weight of 110g.

On June 13th, a rescuer seeked out for help for 4 kittens, born by a feral momma on June 7th. Momma was trapped too, but sadly she had no milk. They tried to bottlefeed the kittens, but they refused the bottle.
They couldn´t find an other momma cat who could foster them – till they called me and found Mocha.
The 4 kittens are in critical state, pretty underweight and they´ll need some prayers.
They get suplemental feeding to fatten them up and to support Mocha.
